Karen Horney's Neurotic Trends
Renowned psychologist Karen Horney introduced the idea of neurotic trends. By this, she meant that methods of dealing with anxiety can become excessive and obsessive. This leads to repeated use of the coping mechanism, in a repetitive manner referred to as neurosis. These trends are satisfied when the source of anxiety disappears or can be ignored temporarily. There are multiple ways to satisfy these trends. Some can be satisfied by being around a specific person, whereas others can be satisfied by avoiding a specific person. Others can be satisfied by obtaining power, and others can be satisfied by staying in a stable, narrow lifestyle.
