Key Differences in the Beliefs of Sigmund Freud and Karen Horney
One of the largest differences between Freud and Horney were what they accredited personality formation to. Freud, using his psychoanalytic theory, states that sexual tension is the driving force of personality and that people move through distinct psychosexual stages in which people move through a set of specific pleasure areas called erogenous zones. Horney, on the other hand, states that anxiety and social tension drove personality formation during childhood. She said that the personality characteristic of the desire for love and care comes from the anxiety of being helpless as a child. She also refuted many of Freud's claims that showed a distinct masculine bias on his psychological theories.
